Meet Sara

Vision
Sara is passionate about music and developing an educational and meaningful relationship with her students and clients.
Qualifications
Her qualifications include a Master's degree in Music Therapy (MMT), Music Therapist Accredited (MTA), Music Therapy Supervisor certified, a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a minor in Psychology (BA), and an Associate piano diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music (ARCT).
Teacher
Sara loves to teach and has taught for over 19 years to students of all ages ranging from 4 to adult. She has prepared students for Royal Conservatory of Music exams in both piano and theory resulting in first class honours with distinction. Sara also teaches students who want to learn for fun in a range of genres including but not limited to pop, jazz, world, and composition.
Music Therapist
Sara has won numerous music awards, including the prestigious Gold Medal for Academic Excellence from the Faculty of Music during her graduate studies. Her research focused on how Balinese music can offer insight in Canadian music therapy practice and she uses a variety of music to reach people, including and not limited to world, classical, oldies, folk songs, and improvisation. Sara has worked in hospitals, long-term care homes, and special needs children's centres. She is also a professional member of both the Canadian Association for Music Therapists (CAMT) and Music Therapy Association for Alberta (MTAA).
Performer
Sara loves sharing the joy of music with others. Her main instrument is the piano (trained in classical and improvisation) and she also plays the clarinet, guitar, Balinese and Sundanese gamelan, Japanese taiko drums, and sings. Her favourite composer is Chopin and she has enjoyed playing in many musical groups, including the University of Calgary's World Music Ensemble, Midnight Taiko Kai, Collective, Jazz Band, and Women’s Choir. She was one of eight pianists in the Piano Destruction exhibition by artist Andrea Buttner in residency at the Banff Centre. She has also played in various gamelan ensembles, including the University of Hong Kong's Balinese ensemble and Memorial University's Gamelan Sagara Asih.
Interests
When she is not engaging in musical pursuits, she loves to travel, hike in the Rocky Mountains, practice yoga, write, and volunteer.
